The new season of the Girls’ Ski World Cup is three weeks away. We spoke with head coach Zoran Zubancic about the summer season, the lofty goals in the new competition period, the home world championships, the motivation and the airport some will be savoring next year, and he also told us that Jirenga Brickell had finished her career. .
The summer season is over. You can be satisfied with the results again. How would you rate it yourself?
The summer season was wonderful. We did what was planned. We also achieved a double podium in the last race at Klingenthal. Overall victory, second place and the Nations Cup are the most a team can achieve. We are satisfied with this.
Of course, we still have some work to do, and some corrections, until winter. There are still a few little things about the T-shirts, of course we still have to test the winter gear. First with ice skates, which we will be waiting for at home. We hope the contestants remain in good health. If there were no problems here, we could go into winter without any worries.
It also says some minor tweaks. What will you pay most attention to until the start of the Wisla World Cup?
For the top contestants we’re talking about cosmetic corrections. Anyway, I would like to bring the other part of the team to a higher level. I think all of our competitors are able to reach the top of the World Cup. Some may be too fast, for others it’s a long-term goal. Our approach is to move towards the top with everyone.
Even Wisla, some things should be tested with T-shirts because they are new cuts this year. I expect the control to be tighter. I hope they make it the same for everyone.
Speaking of jerseys. Ema Klinec’s result from the first series of a mixed team match at Klingenthal was not counted due to the inappropriate jersey. what is wrong?
I can say that this is kind of rule on rule. You may have problems if you want to satisfy one rule, but then you may not be able to satisfy another rule. There have been some disqualifications, including Marietta Kramer and Sara Takanashi. But I think Ema uses one of the smaller shirts and we don’t play around with the shirts.
Emma trained with the club during the summer. Like she said, she needed some kind of retreat. How do you look at it?
Last season was stressful for Emma, so we decided to get her out of that environment a little bit. Emma has trained a lot at the club before. We are familiar with working there. Everything went well. The plan was for him to come back for the last match, which he did. She is back more relaxed and healthy. Next season is going to be tough, and hopefully you’ll get through the season with as little pressure as possible.
She needed a retreat
Last season the jumpers achieved exceptional results, they also celebrated in the Nations Cup for the first time, and came back with Olympic medals, a triple victory, several doubles… What are your goals in the new season, in which the highlight will be the home of the World Championship?
The wish of all contestants is great. Even the best want more. We have quite a few competitors who have proven themselves to be the best in the world. The rest are of the opinion that it is possible, that they too can gradually rise. However, those who are already at the top have the goal of staying on top for as long as possible, which can be even more difficult.
But if we continue like this and keep the relaxation we have in the team, working with the team, not just for ourselves, and if the girls keep ourselves healthy, I think we can make the new season as successful as we were last year.
What is written within the performance objectives?
The goals are high. Since we have practically achieved everything that was possible, we cannot even set lower goals for ourselves. We want to win the Nations Cup again. Personally, I think we are a strong national team so we can do it again. In the World Cup a medal in every match. Girls might want more.
Some time ago you said you expect at least three medals in the tournament, Nika Križnar added that she can see three, but there are others who can also celebrate at home.
surely. We have many opportunities in the individual competition in the small and big jump, and there is also the team competition, where we are generally strong, and there is also the mixed team competition, in which we also rely on the boys. There are four medals in sight, but we have proven that many contenders can finish the race on the podium.
Urša Bogataj: The pressure will certainly be greater because the restroom will be at home, but …
On motivation after last year’s great season
We don’t have problems with motivation per se, the girls work really hard. In the beginning, we talk about their goals and how to achieve them, and between us we have some corrections and we talk about which things are going in the right direction and which are not. In any case, we must make such a program that it is motivating, they are willing to do, know what they are doing, and in the intervals we take enough time for renewal, for interesting parallel activities, somehow break the monotony. I don’t feel they need more stimulation.
A double victory for the Slovenian, Urša Bogataj ended the summer season in style!
The World Cup season will start earlier than you are used to. early November 4 in Wisla, where female and male jumpers for the first time will compete at this level on a combination of ice skates and a plastic landing pad. Where are you getting ready for your snowboarding introduction?
Before that, we go to Bischofshofen, then we have two ski slopes at home, both in Planica and Kranj. If we do about 60 jumps on ice skates, that’s definitely enough to start normally in Wisla.
A big new event on this year’s calendar is the airport in Vikersund, where the top 15 players of the Raw-Air Tour will be able to compete. How many members of your national team do you think are hoping for at the airport?
It’s hard to talk about. It will be necessary to speak to the contestants individually. It will be determined by their wish, and then also with my permission. The boundaries are set artificially. It might be easier to drop a girl who’s going to be 22 on the Raw-Air tour at the airport than a girl who’s going to be, say, seven or four.
We know the airport requires a different way to jump… I’m not afraid the girls can’t handle the facility, I’m more afraid of the circumstances. I just hope these are all right and the jury is smart.
What is the condition of Jerneja Brecl? Has her career ended?
